Get Started with Cannabis Cooking
Everything you need to make your first batch of cannabutter — in about 2 minutes of reading.
What You Need
Cannabis (decarbed)
Heat-activate it first or it won’t work. 115°C in the oven for 40 minutes, covered in foil.
Unsalted Butter
1 gram of cannabis per 15 grams of butter is a solid starting ratio. Use unsalted — you control the flavour.
Cheesecloth or Strainer
To filter out the plant material after infusion. A nut milk bag works too.
Cannabutter in 6 Steps
1. Decarb your cannabis. Spread on a baking tray, cover with foil, 115°C for 40 minutes. This is the step that activates THC — skip it and you’ve just made plant-flavoured butter.
2. Melt your butter. Low heat in a saucepan. Don’t let it brown.
3. Add the decarbed cannabis. Stir it in gently. Keep the heat as low as it goes.
4. Simmer for 2–3 hours. Stir every 20 minutes. The butter should barely bubble — if it’s boiling, it’s too hot.
5. Strain through cheesecloth into a glass jar. Squeeze gently to get every drop. Discard the plant material.
6. Refrigerate overnight. The butter solidifies on top, water settles below. Scrape off the butter, discard the water. Done.
Using Sous Vide? Even Easier.
Sous vide gives you more consistent results and virtually no smell — perfect if you’re in an apartment or just want a cleaner process.
Decarb: Vacuum seal your cannabis. 95°C water bath for 1 hour.
Infuse: Open the bag, add butter, reseal. 85°C for 4 hours.
Strain and refrigerate — same as stovetop method above.
The lower temperatures preserve more terpenes, and the sealed bag means nothing escapes. It’s the set-and-forget method.
Quick Dosage Guide
If your cannabis is 15% THC and you use 7 grams, you’ve got roughly 1,050mg THC total in the whole batch of butter. Divide that by the number of servings in your recipe to get per-serve dosage.
New to edibles? Start with 2.5–5mg per serve. Effects take 30–120 minutes to kick in. You can always have more — you can’t have less.

Safety & Responsible Use
Start low, go slow. Cannabis edibles take 30–120 minutes to take effect and can last 4–8 hours. Always start with a low dose (2.5–5mg THC) and wait at least 90 minutes before consuming more. Keep edibles clearly labelled and away from children and pets.
